The Club

A Members' Club,
Shaped Over a Century

Downfield has been played over since 1895. What began as nine holes at Baldovan has become one of Scotland's finest parkland courses on the north-west edge of Dundee — carried by its members, its professionals and the champions who have come through it.

Since 1895

The club was founded in 1895, and the first course opened on 30 December that year at Baldovan as nine holes, with Sir Reginald Ogilvie, Bart. as Honorary Captain — the original clubhouse was an old horse-drawn tramcar. After the land returned to agriculture during the First World War, the club was re-established in 1932, renting three fields from the Camperdown Estate for £150 a year, and later extended to eighteen holes as membership grew. In the early 1960s the local council provided land in exchange for parts of the original course, and five of the original holes were retained in the layout you play today.

The Professional

A Proud
Professional Tradition

Fred Walker was club professional at Downfield for 39 years and was voted Club Professional of the Year in 1969. Bobby Walker, aged 14, set a course record of 63 — six shots below the previous best — twice won the Scottish Professional Championship and represented Scotland in the Canada Cup. A PGA professional and pro shop remain on site today, with a TrackMan 4 launch monitor for lessons and fittings.
